New Year, New Us

Happy (late) new year!

2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year here at Hobby Wheel. You may notice a refresh to our social media presence; Facebook, Instagram, Tik-Tok (follow us!), and the recent addition of our blog & newsletters will for sure feel new to all of you in your feeds. But what does that mean for you? Well, not much. You can still find us in the same place with the same amount of outdoor fun. Our Hobby Wheel branding and logos will remain the same, a crowd favorite we’ve discovered that you all know and love. Our posts, however, will be a lot more fun (like us!). You can expect to see more of our crew doing the things we love, playing outside on the hill or on the trails, and in the shop. You can find out more about the personality behind Hobby Wheel and our crew in the coming weeks as we do a ‘Meet the Crew’ mini-series. For those of you not following us already, you can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik-Tok via the links below.

Additionally, if you get any new skis, a snowboard, or a bike, we’ll Feature you (With permission, of course) getting after it outside with your new gear in a post on our socials. Not to mention, you’ll have the ultimate bragging rights for everyone to see you being totally rad. You’ll even be tagged in the post, as long as you have a Facebook and/or Instagram, making it easy for us to find you.

Who are you?

All this planning is all well and good, but who’s the one running with this new account presence? Well, it’s me, the guy writing this. I’m Peter, our new Hobby Wheel social media manager. You’ve seen some posts from me before, but starting today, I’m “that guy.” I’m a student at Ironwood High School, and the refresh project I described in the first paragraph is a brainchild that I get to pursue and see through, thanks to Hobby Wheel and Pixel Forest Studio. I’ve been on the Hobby Wheel crew for the past 3 years, but now I’m entering a new direction with a focus on marketing. As a lifelong lover of skiing and biking, enjoying the outdoors is totally my thing. In the last two years I’ve been doing more mountain biking, and have fallen in love with it, especially the more gravity oriented mountain biking (down-hilling). I’m very much a ski and bike tech nerd, so any questions that you have about tech related to skis and bikes, hit me up. Sadly, I cant say the same about snowboards, but don’t worry, we have other crew members to help with that and you’ll still get to see plenty of snowboarding content on here.

Wild, Warm Winter

I can’t count the number of times in the past month that I have had people asking abut the weather, and for good reason. We’ve never had a winter like this, and now the warm is being followed by an almost dangerous cold snap. Winter is finally here, and its taking no time to make up for the missed month and a half. The last storm has bolstered the hills, helping with their snow totals and lead to the opening of more trails. More recently, the past two days have been warming back up for “spring-like” skiing conditions, with the next 7 days being anywhere between the upper 30’s to lower 40’s. That said, you better get outside and enjoy the snow while you can, we don’t know how long it will last as the temps creep into the warmer spectrum again. So if you’re on the fence about booking that last minute trip here for the snow, this is your sign to grab your gear and get outside.

Holiday Recap

Now that the Christmas to New Year’s stretch is a few weeks behind us, we can truly reflect on how it went. First off, huge congrats to the rest of the team here at Hobby Wheel, this is always a super busy time of year, and with a newer crew than recent years, everyone handled the pressure and work amazingly. With the influence of Mother Nature’s warmth, the local economy was less busy than usual, and any business around town could tell you that. Regardless, we saw the true spirit of everyone who stopped in, still coming out and doing what they love, no matter if it was skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or just simply being outside. Thank you to all the dedicated travelers who still came up here, despite the weather, to play outside. We had people coming into the shop from Wisconsin, lower Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Virginia, Texas, and California (to name a few)!

This is just the first of our bi-weekly blogs, and you can expect them to be wildly more interesting as they progress. We’ll tell you about local ski and bike race results, trips, and other exciting adventures from the store. Be sure to subscribe to the blog/newsletter here on our homepage, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik-Tok to keep up to date with all of our reminders to get outside.

Happy Adventuring!

- Peter
